Teflon

Trade name for polytetrafluoroethene (PTFE), a tough, waxlike, heat-resistant plastic used for coating nonstick cookware and in gaskets and bearings.

In 2001 Canadian scientists discovered that Teflon degraded when heated to form trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a pollutant that persists in the environment for many years.
