Tehachapi Mountains

Mountain range in south-central California, running transversely (east–west) for some 80 km/50 mi. The Tehachapis connect the Coast Ranges with the southern end of the Sierra Nevada and are often considered the dividing line between Northern and Southern California. Double Mountain (2,435 m/7,988 ft) is the highest elevation.

The city of Tehachapi (population (1990) 5,800), 58 km/36 mi southeast of Bakersfield, is a road and rail trade centre; fruit and cement are produced, and there is a state prison to the west.
