Tehuacán

Town in the state of Puebla in southern Mexico; population (1995) 190,500. Situated 104 km/65 mi southeast of Puebla city, the town lies at an altitude of 1,650 m/5,413 ft, and is at the junction of the Mexico City–Veracruz and Mexico City–Oaxaca railways. Agricultural products are manufactured, and water from the town's mineral springs is bottled and sold worldwide. Other industries include flour milling, tanning, and the production of textiles and chemicals. There is an airport.

Archaeological excavations in the Tehuacán valley have revealed evidence of early settlements from about 7000 BC, when maize is thought to have been first cultivated. The present town was founded in 1540.
