Telford

Town in Shropshire, west-central England, the administrative headquarters of Telford and Wrekin. It is 52 km/32 mi northwest of Birmingham; population (2001) 138,250 (urban area). Founded as Dawley New Town in 1963, it was extended and renamed Telford in 1968. Ironbridge Gorge is nearby.
