Telmányi, Emil (1892-1988)

Hungarian violinist and conductor. He studied at the Budapest Conservatory and appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1911, with the first continental performance of Elgar's concerto. He married Carl Nielsen's daughter in 1918 and appeared with the composer in London in 1923. He conducted concerts throughout Europe and opera at Budapest. In 1956 he formed a string quintet with his second wife and her three children. He was a teacher at the Aarhus Conservatory 1940-69 and was responsible for development of ‘Vega’ bow and for the performance of Baroque music, especially that of Bach.
