Templemore

Market town in County Tipperary, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 2,200. It is situated at the foot of Devil's Bit Mountain (480 m/1,574 ft), 55 km/34 mi north of Clonmel; Loughmoe Castle and Barna Castle are nearby. The Irish Gardai (police) training centre is located in Templemore in a former army barracks. The ruins of Templemore Abbey and Black Castle can be seen in the town.

Loughmore Castle 5 km/3 mi south of Templemore has a 15th-century tower incorporated into a 17th-century fortified mansion and was the seat of the Purcell family. Barna Castle 3 km/2 mi southwest is a large circular keep. At Drom, 6 km/4 mi southwest, are the remains of an ancient ring fort, reputedly the site of the Synod of Rathbreasail in 1111.
