Temuco

Capital of Araucanía region, south-central Chile, situated to the north of the Lake District on the River Cautín, 675 km/420 mi south of Santiago; population (2002) 227,100. Cereals, timber, and apples are produced in the surrounding region, and industries include coal mining, and the manufacture of steel and textiles. It is a market town for the Mapuche Indians, who trade their produce and crafts. The great majority of them live in the forest land around Temuco. Founded in 1881, the city is the gateway to the Lake District region.
