TemucoCapital of Araucanía region, south-central Chile, situated to the north of the Lake District on the River Cautín, 675 km/420 mi south of Santiago; population (2002) 227,100. Cereals, timber, and apples are produced in the surrounding region, and industries include coal mining, and the manufacture of steel and textiles. It is a market town for the Mapuche Indians, who trade their produce and crafts. The great majority of them live in the forest land around Temuco.
