Tenerife

The town of Garachico, on the north coast of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands are an autonomous Spanish community situated in the Atlantic, off the west coast of Morocco. The islands are volcanic, and in 1706 most of the settlement at Garachico was buried under a lava flow. Until then, Garachico had been the main port and capital of Tenerife.

Las Mercedes is the largest forest on Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. Situated in the eastern part of the island, close to the Anaga mountains, it constitutes half of the total forested area of Tenerife.

Largest of the Canary Islands, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain; area 2,060 sq km/795 sq mi; population (1991) 706,900. Fruit and vegetables are produced, especially bananas and tomatoes, and the island is a popular tourist resort. Santa Cruz is the main town here, and Pico de Teide, an active volcano, is the highest peak in Spain (3,713 m/12,186 ft high).
