Teniers, David (1610–1690)

Flemish painter. He is best known for his scenes of peasant life, full of vitality, inspired by Adriaen Brouwer. His works were immensely popular and he became court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, governor of the Netherlands, in Brussels.

Born in Antwerp, he was the son of David Teniers the Elder, from whom he received his principal instruction. As curator of the archduke's art collection, he made many copies of the pictures and a collection of engravings, Theatrum Pictorium/Picture Theatre 1660.

His work was a development of his father's style, influenced also by Brouwer. He was happiest in his portrayals of small figures in landscapes or rustic interiors. Among his finest works are Meeting of the Civic Guards 1642 (Hermitage, St Petersburg) and Village Fête 1643 (National Gallery, London). He also painted portraits.

Teniers, David (1582–1649)

Flemish painter, active in Antwerp. He studied painting under Rubens, and Adam Elsheimer in Rome. His subjects were mainly religious. As a painter of Flemish life he was eclipsed by his son David Teniers (the Younger).
