A cartoon by English illustrator John Tenniel satirizing the Franco-Prussian War, Punch 1870. The French declared war 19 July, but suffered a series of defeats until forced to surrender three months later.

English illustrator and cartoonist. He is known for his cartoons for Punch magazine and for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1872). He was knighted in 1893.

Born in London, Tenniel studied at the Royal Academy schools. In 1850 he succeeded Richard Doyle as joint cartoonist with John Leech on Punch, his illustrations to Aesop's Fables having attracted much attention. He was with Punch for over 50 years, the 2,300 cartoons and drawings he produced forming a vivid political history of Victorian England.
