Tenterden

Town in Kent, southeast England, 16 km/10 mi southwest of Ashford; population (2001) 6,900. The town has a wide variety of 18th-century buildings in a broad tree-lined high street. Tenterden was an associate member of the Cinque Ports group of ports, as a ‘limb’ of Rye.

St Mildred's church has a tall 15th-century tower which gives wide views over the Weald.

Tenterden was originally an area used by the inhabitants of the Isle of Thanet as pasture for pigs. The village of Smallhythe, Tenterden's river port in medieval times, lies to the south of the town.
