Teresina

Capital of the state of Piauí in northeast Brazil; population (2000) 677,500. This is the hottest city in Brazil. It is situated about 275 km/171 mi inland on the River Parnaíba. It is the commercial centre of an agricultural and cattle-raising area. The main lines of communication between Teresina and the coast are either by river to the port of Parnaíba at the mouth of the Parnaíba River or by rail to São Luis in the neighbouring state of Maranhão.
