Termez

Town in southeastern Uzbekistan, and capital of Surkhandarya wiloyat (region); population (1995) 62,000. Termez lies 260 km/162 mi south of Samarkand on the frontier with Afghanistan, and is located on the Amu Darya River and the Bukhara–Dushanbe railway. It is the market centre for an area growing fine-fibre cotton.
