Ternate

Volcanic island of the Maluku group, Indonesia; area 106 sq km/41 sq mi; population (1975 est) 20,000. The island is densely forested, and exports timber. Ternate contains the triple-crater Gama Gama volcano (1,715 m/5,627 ft). The island was an important centre of clove production in Portuguese and later Dutch colonial times, but nutmeg and copra are now the most important products. Ternate was the first part of the Maluku (Moluccas) group to accept the Islamic faith.
