Terni

Industrial town in the valley of the River Nera, Umbria region, central Italy, 80 km/50 mi from Rome; population (1992) 108,000. It has iron, steel, and engineering works, and fertilizers, plastics, and textiles are manufactured. The nearby Marmore Falls, the highest in Italy, were created by the Romans in order to drain the Rieti marshes; hydroelectricity is now produced there.

The town's site is thought to have been occupied since 1000 BC, and there are Roman remains and early Christian tombs. The cathedral (13th–17th centuries) has a 10th-century crypt. Terni is reputedly the birthplace of the Roman historian Tacitus.
