Christmas Island

Island in the Indian Ocean, 360 km/224 mi south of Java; area 140 sq km/54 sq mi; population (1994 est) 2,500. Found to be uninhabited when reached by English explorer Captain W Mynars on Christmas Day 1643, it was annexed by Britain in 1888, occupied by Japan between 1942 and 1945, and transferred to Australia in 1958. After a referendum in 1984, it was included in Northern Territory. Its phosphate mine was closed in 1987. Tourism and casinos are being developed.

Former name of Kiritimati, an island in Kiribati, in the central Pacific.
