terror bird

Member of an extinct group of flightless, carnivorous birds that lived 62–2.5 million years ago in South America. During this time they were the dominant predators. From fossils, 25 species of terror bird have been recognized, ranging in height from 1–3 m/3.3–9.8 ft. Their closest living relative is the seriema.
