Terry, Alfred Howe (1827-1890)

US military leader. He served with distinction in the American Civil War 1861-65. After the war he commanded the Department of Dakota and also served in the Department of the South 1869-72. He was George Custer's commander in the 1876 Sioux War and later negotiated with Sitting Bull, supervising the opening of the Northern Plains.

Terry was born in Hartford, Connecticut, educated at Yale University, and became a barrister 1849. During the Civil War he was colonel of the 2nd Connecticut militia and was promoted to brigadier general 1865.
