Terry, Quinlan

Terry, (John) Quinlan (1937– )

English postmodernist architect. He works in a neoclassical idiom. His traditionalist projects include country houses, for example Merks Hall, Great Dunmow, Essex (1982); the larger-scale riverside project at Richmond, London (1984–87); the restoration of the three state drawing rooms at 10 Downing Street (1988–90), and a new lecture theatre and library for Downing College, Cambridge (1992–94; winner of the 1994 Stirling Building of the Year Award).

He was a Rome Scholar 1968–69 and was a member of the Royal Fine Art Commission 1996–98. He holds the European Prize for the Reconstruction of the City of Archives d'Architecture Moderne. He won the award for Best Modern Classical House in 2003, awarded by the Georgian Group.
