Teruel

Province of northeastern Spain in Aragón autonomous community; area 14,802 sq km/5,715 sq mi; population (1991 est) 143,300. The province is mountainous - the highest point is the Jabalambre (2,020 m/6,627 ft) - and several rivers flow through it, including the Guadalaviar, the Guadalope, and the Turia. The economy is based mainly on sheep-rearing; other products include cereal, fruit, olive oil, and wine, and there are iron and lignite deposits. The capital is Teruel.

Teruel is the scene of the English author George Orwell's experience of fighting with the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), recorded in Homage to Catalonia (1938).
