test cross

In genetics, a breeding experiment used to discover the genotype of an individual organism. By crossing with a double recessive of the same species, the offspring will indicate whether the test individual is homozygous or heterozygous for the characteristic in question. In peas, a tall plant under investigation would be crossed with a double recessive short plant with known genotype tt. The results of the cross will be all tall plants if the test plant is TT. If the test plant is in fact Tt then there will be some short plants (genotype tt) among the offspring.
