Texas City

City and deep-water port in Galveston County, southeast Texas, on Galveston Bay, 8 km/5 mi northwest of Galveston; population (1996 est) 42,400. Cargoes include oil, tin, chemicals, and grain. The College of the Mainland (1966) is in the city.

Developed in the 1890s, it was rebuilt after a 1915 hurricane, and underwent expansion after World War II. In April 1947 a severe explosion on board a ship in Texas City harbour killed over 600 people and destroyed much of the city.
