Thanh Hoa

Capital of Thanh Hoa province, north-central Vietnam, 25 km/16 mi inland from the Gulf of Tonkin; population (1998 est) 105,000. The city lies just to the south of the Song Hong (Red River) delta, on a tributary of the Song Ma River. It is growing in importance as a commercial and industrial centre, trading in and processing the agricultural and forestry products of the province, including rice, cotton, tobacco, groundnuts, jute, maize and timber. The city is linked to Hanoi by road and railway.

There is a citadel and a Roman Catholic cathedral.
