Thanjavur

Town in Tamil Nadu state, southeast India, 273 km/170 mi south of Chennai (formerly Madras); population (1991) 200,200. It stands at the head of the densely-populated and heavily irrigated Cauvery delta, where rice is cultivated. The town is a Brahman centre (see caste), and a political, literary, and educational focus.

Formerly the capital of the Chola Kings, it has 93 temples, notably the Brihadisvara Temple dating from the 11th century.
