Thaxted

Town in Essex, eastern England, between Braintree and Saffron Waldon; population (2001) 3,150. The Guildhall is a three-storey timber-framed building dating from the mid-15th century, and is one of the few remaining medieval guildhalls in England. Thaxted has a large Perpendicular Gothic church, whose spire is 55 m/180 ft high.

Thaxted was important in medieval times for its cutlery industry, and was formerly a borough, incorporated by charter of Philip of Spain and Mary I. The Tudor brick mansion Horham Hall is nearby.
