Thayer, Alexander Wheelock

    0.06 sec.

Thayer, Alexander Wheelock (1817–1897)

US biographer. He studied law at Harvard University and in 1849 went to Germany, living at Bonn and Berlin, and also to Prague and Vienna, collecting material for a Beethoven biography. After some journalistic activities in New York and Boston, he again went to Europe 1854–56 and for a third time in 1858, eventually becoming US consul at Trieste. His Beethoven biography reached only the year 1816, and the unfinished fourth volume, covering the composer's last decade of life, was completed by Hermann Deiters in a German edition of the work. An English edition was published 1921 by Krehbiel and a revision of this by Elliot Forbes in 1964.
