Detroit River

Outlet of Lake Saint Clair, immediately east of Detroit, in southeastern Michigan, which flows mainly west and south for 48 km/30 mi into the western end of Lake Erie. On its course, this important shipping channel between lakes Huron and Erie forms part of the US-Canada border.

The Detroit River is crossed by many tunnels and bridges between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, and in recent years has been severely polluted by industrial waste and sewage from neighbouring municipalities. Fort Detroit, the first European settlement on the river, was founded by the French explorer Antoine de la Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, in 1601.
