Empire State BuildingLandmark building in New York, New York. It is 443 m/1,454 ft high with 102 floors, and was the highest building in the world until 1970, when it was superseded by the World Trade Center, New York (which was destroyed in 2001 by a terrorist attack). It was built in 1930 at a cost of over US$40,000,000. Designed in the Art Deco style by the architectural firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, the building contains office space and facilities for tourists such as restaurants and observatories.
