Girvan

River in southwest Scotland, rising on the borders of Dumfries and Galloway unitary authority, and flowing west for 56 km/35 mi to join the Firth of Clyde at Girvan. Its waters provide trout and salmon fishing.

Coastal town and holiday resort in South Ayrshire unitary authority, Scotland, 36 km/23 mi southwest of Ayr; population (2001) 7,000. It has a fishing industry renowned for its herrings.

The castles of Killochen and Penkill stand nearby.
