Holland

Popular name for the Netherlands; also two provinces of the Netherlands, see North Holland and South Holland, which have been divided since 1840.

Holland

City in Ottawa and Allegan counties, southwestern Michigan; population (2000) 35,000. Holland lies on the shore on Lake Macatawa, just off Lake Michigan, and 40 km/25 mi southwest of Grand Rapids.

Religious secessionists from the Netherlands established Holland in 1847. It became a magnet for more Dutch immigrants, who first worked at lumbering, and then began to cultivate field crops and raise poultry. Although the city now manufactures furnaces, motors, and boats, it is still most famous for its tulips, tulip bulbs, and annual tulip festival. The Netherlands Museum contains exhibits that display the city's Dutch heritage, which is also commemorated at Windmill Island Park and the Dutch Village. Holland is home to two colleges run by the Dutch Reformed Church, Hope College (founded 1862) and Western Theological Seminary (founded 1869).
