The design is by Charles Ricketts (1866–1931). The first production of The Gondoliers at the Savoy Theatre took place in 1889. | Theatre in London, England. It was built in 1881 on the site of the Savoy Palace, designed by C J Phipps (1835–1897). Its first production was Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience, under the management of Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844–1901). The theatre was long the home of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and saw the production of all the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. |
| The Savoy Theatre was the world's first public building to be lit entirely by electricity. After the auditorium was demolished in 1929, a new theatre designed by Frank Tugwell was opened the same year, with a revival of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers. After a fire in 1990, the theatre was rebuilt again in 1993, designed by William Whitfield. |
