White Mountains

Glaciated mountain range in New Hampshire, USA. Much of the area is high plateau country, from which rises the Presidential range culminating in Mount Washington (1,917 m/6,288 ft), the highest mountain in northeastern USA. The White Mountains are a northerly continuation of the Appalachian Mountains. Tourism (particularly winter sports) and timber-processing are important.

The highest peaks are all named after US presidents. Much of the range is contained within the White Mountains national forest. Glaciation produced the Old Man of the Mountains at Franconia Notch, a crag (365 m/1,200 ft) that gives the appearance of a face.
