The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, England. One of the great lyric theatres, during its accomplished history the Royal Opera House has played host to some of the finest ballet companies, opera companies, and orchestras in the world.

Britain's leading opera house, sited at Covent Garden, London.

The original theatre opened in 1732, was destroyed by fire in 1808 and reopened in 1809. It was again destroyed by fire in 1856, and the third and present building dates from 1858. It has been the home of the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet since 1946. Due to its financial difficulties, it closed in January 1999, reopening in December of the same year after spending £214 on refurbishment and undergoing financial and managerial restructuring.
