Haymarket Theatre

Theatre in the Haymarket, London, designed by John Nash and opened in 1821. The theatre was refurbished in 1904 and 1994 and seats 905 people on three levels. Many major theatre figures were associated with the Haymarket, for example Oscar Wilde, whose comedies A Woman of No Importance and An Ideal Husband premiered there in 1893; and John Gielgud, who produced the performances for the 1939 repertory season.

The theatre was under the management of Ben Webster (1797–1882) from 1837 to 1853 and then John Buckstone, whose tenancy lasted till 1878. Under the Bancrofts 1880–85, extensive alterations were made to the interior.

The first theatre on this site was the Little Theatre in the Hay, which opened in 1720. Under the Licensing Act 1737, which forced unlicensed theatres to close, it stood derelict for a time, but in l747 the actor and mimic Samuel Foote (1720–1777) reopened it (without a licence). It was closed in 1817. The present Haymarket Theatre was built a little to the south.
