Thelon

River in the Northwest Territories, Canada; length 900 km/550 mi. Rising east of the Great Slave Lake, it winds across the tundra of the Canadian Shield, widening into a series of lakes, including Aberdeen, Schultz, and Baker, before entering Chesterfield Inlet, Hudson Bay. Baker Lake is the river's chief settlement.

The Dubawnt River, its longest tributary, flows generally northeast, over 840 km/525 mi, from near the northwestern Saskatchewan border through Dubawnt and other smaller lakes to join the Thelon and Lake Aberdeen on the eastern boundary of the Thelon Game Sanctuary, created in 1927 to protect musk oxen.

The Keewatin (Caribou) Inuit for centuries based their lives on the Thelon area's caribou; many were relocated in the 20th century.
