Themistocles (c. 524–c. 460 BC)

Athenian admiral and politician. His success in persuading the Athenians to build a navy is credited with saving Greece from Persian conquest. During the Persian War, he fought with distinction in the battles of Artemisium and Salamis in 480 BC. After the war he pursued an anti-Spartan line which got him ostracized, possibly in 471. Some years later he fled to Asia Minor where he died.
