Williams, Ted (1918–2002)

US baseball player. Establishing a lifetime batting average of .344, he was six times the American League batting champion and twice won the most valuable player award. In 1947 he became the second player ever to twice win the Triple Crown (leading the league in batting, home runs, and runs batted in for a season).

Born in San Diego, California, Williams was signed by the Boston Red Sox and made his major league debut 1939. Named rookie of the year, he went on to a 19-season career with the Red Sox (interrupted by service in World War II and the Korean War).

Williams retired as a player in 1960 and served as manager of the Washington Senators 1969–71 and the Texas Rangers in 1972. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
