Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.20 sec.

Theodosius (I) the Great (c. AD 346–395)

Roman emperor. Appointed emperor of the East in 379, he fought against the Goths successfully, and established Christianity throughout the region. He invaded Italy in 393, restoring unity to the empire, and died in Milan. He was buried in Constantinople.

A pious Christian and adherent of the Nicene creed, he dealt severely with heretics, ordering the death penalty for some extreme sects. In 390 he ordered the massacre of 7,000 citizens of Thessalonica to avenge the killing of one of his generals, an act for which he did penance.
