The island of Thera (modern Santorini), Greece, has an area of 75 sq km/29 sq mi. With its spectacular cliffs, small villages, and beaches, it is a popular holiday destination.

Volcanic island in the Aegean, off the south coast of Greece, with the remains of a Bronze Age settlement at Akrotiri. This was buried as a result of a volcanic eruption about 1500 BC, an event that has sometimes been linked to the downfall of the Minoan civilization.

Excavations, beginning 1967, have uncovered wall paintings with dolphins, monkeys, and boxers. The island was later resettled and in the late 7th century BC some of the population left to found a colony in Cyrene, on the north coast of Egypt.
