Thiès

Town and administrative capital of Thiès region in western Senegal, situated 70 km/43 mi east of Dakar; population (1992) 201,300. Thiès is a major transportation centre on the Dakar–Niger railway. Its central position has made it a focal point for many industries including cotton, phosphates, fertilizer production, asbestos, aluminium, and crafts.
