Thibodaux

Town and administrative headquarters of Lafourche Parish, southeast Louisiana; population (1990) 14,000. It is on the Bayou Lafourche, 72 km/45 mi west-southwest of New Orleans. It is an agricultural centre for sugar, dairy products, vegetables, cotton, and seafood. The regional oil and gas industry is also important to the local economy. The town is home to Nicholls State University (1948).

Thibodaux was founded 1750 as a river depot. St. John's Episcopal Church was established in 1841 by Leonidas Polk, the ‘Fighting Bishop’ of the Confederate army.
