Girga

Town in eastern Egypt on the River Nile, 100 km/62 mi from the ruins of Thebes; population (2001 est) 106,700. The town is the seat of a Coptic bishopric and the site of a Roman Catholic monastery; most of its inhabitants are Christian. Girga lies on the Cairo–Aswan railway. The main product is cotton.
