Third Man, The

    0.02 sec.

Third Man, The

Film noir made in the UK in 1949, directed by Carol Reed and with a screenplay by Graham Greene. It is set in Vienna just after World War II, and follows a writer (Joseph Cotten) trailing his friend turned black-market racketeer, Harry Lime (Orson Welles).

The film is a powerful melodrama, which climaxes with a chase through the Vienna sewers. The solo zither score by the Viennese composer Anton Karas (1906–1985) heightens the tension and gives the film its distinctive signature.
