Thomas, Arthur Goring

    0.07 sec.

Thomas, Arthur Goring (1850–1892)

English composer. His music reflects the comfortable, undemanding French style of his time, and includes the operas Esmeralda (1883), based on Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris, and Nadeshda (1885).

He was educated for the civil service, but later studied music with Emile Durand in Paris and with Sullivan and Prout at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Later he studied orchestration with Max Bruch in Berlin. He began to work on an opera to a libretto by his brother, Don Braggadocio, and although he did not finish it, he persevered and eventually received a commission from the Carl Rosa Opera Company. He became insane in 1891.
