Thomas à Kempis (c. 1380–1471)

German Augustinian monk, author of De Imitatio Christi/Imitation of Christ (1441), a devotional handbook of the devotio moderna. The work proved quickly popular, being translated into Dutch and French.

Thomas à Kempis lived at the monastery of Zwolle in the Netherlands. He took his name from his birthplace Kempen, near Cologne. He also wrote hymns, sermons, and biographies.
