Thomasius, Christian (1655–1728)

German jurist and lecturer in law.

He began to lecture on law in Leipzig in 1684. In 1687 he took the daring step of lecturing in German instead of Latin, and in the following year sided with the Pietists (see Pietism) in their controversy with the orthodox. He removed to the University of Halle on its foundation in 1694. Thomasius was a leading proponent of natural law, and an opponent of superstition and intolerance.
