Thomson, Bobby (1923– )

US baseball player of Scottish origin. He participated in one of baseball's most memorable moments in 1951 when he hit a home run – called ‘the shot heard around the world’ – in the ninth inning of a deciding play-off game against the Brooklyn Dodgers to win the National League pennant for the New York Giants. A fine outfielder, he hit 20 or more home runs eight times during his 15-year career (1946–60). Thomson was born in Glasgow, Scotland, moving to the USA at the age of two.
