In anatomy, an irregularly shaped bone that forms part of the vertebral column. Children have 33 vertebrae, 5 of which fuse in adults to form the sacrum and 4 to form the coccyx. There are 7 cervical vertebrae in the neck, 12 thoracic vertebrae in the thorax with the ribs attached, and 5 lumbar vertebrae in the lower back.
