Thornhill

Village in Dumfries and Galloway unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the River Nith, 24 km/15 mi north of Dumfries; population (2001) 1,800. The village includes two boulevards lined with 100-year-old lime trees planted by the 6th Duke of Buccleuch.

Among its architectural features are Drumlanrig Castle, an ancestral seat of the Duchy of Buccleuch and Queensberry, and Maxwelton House.

Thornhill was the birthplace in 1682 of Annie Laurie, immortalized in the verse of William Douglas, an unsuccessful suitor.
